Community

The lawyers at Ng Ariss Fong believe that giving back to the community and to our profession is part of the privilege and duty of being a lawyer.

Michael supports the legal community through his legal scholarship. He believes that the law is a complex system which provides justice in a changing world only through constant attention, adjustment and refinement. To this end, the lawyers all supports not only well-thought approaches to the law in particular cases, but also resources which make the law more accessible and understandable. Michael authors publishes a legal textbook, Fiduciary Duties: Duties of Loyalty and Faithfulness (Canada Law Book), as a guide for lawyers and others to rapidly developing principles of loyalty applied by Canadian courts.

Lisa gives back to the community by volunteering for various organizations. She is especially interested in assisting legal organizations to assess and advance cases involving human rights and constitutional law. Currently, she is the secretary and treasurer of the Community Legal Assistance Society, which is an umbrella organization providing pro-bono legal assistance in the areas of mental health law, disability law, human rights law and constitutional law. In her capacity as a board member, she sits on the litigation and human rights sub-committees to assist in assessing which cases to advance. In addition, she supports her own profession by sitting as an elected provincial council member of the Canadian Bar Association for Vancouver County. She has chaired the Equality Committee of the BC Canadian Bar Association, and has sat as a member of the BC Law Society’s Equity and Diversity Committee.

Kuan is deeply interested in diversity issues and how they legally manifest in the law. He believes in an intersectional approach toward diversity that integrates issues such as race, gender, disability and sexual orientation. He has worked with a broad spectrum of multicultural, diversity-oriented and human rights community organizations both in a professional and volunteer capacity. He has been invited to speak on diversity issues by many organizations including the CBC, Vancouver Asian Film Festival, Outlaws (the gay and lesbian law students association of UBC), the First Nations Law Students Association of UBC, the Indigenous Bar Association and the Canadian Race Relations Foundation.
