All laws must conform with UNDRIP: join us to unpack the landmark Gitxaala decision

On December 5th, the BC Court of Appeal released its judgment in Gitxaala v. British Columbia (Chief Gold Commissioner)2025 BCCA 430, affirming that BC’s Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) is legally enforceable.

West Coast Environmental Law has graciously agreed to host a webinar where counsel for Gitxaala Nation (us!) and counsel for Ehatteshat First Nation will unpack the BC Court of Appeal decision.

This precedent-setting judgment decides that all domestic laws are to be interpreted in conformity with UNDRIP. Further, if a court agrees that a law of BC is inconsistent with UNDRIP, the court may require that BC consult and cooperate with Indigenous peoples to align the law.

We will discuss what this case means for Indigenous rights and Canada’s domestic laws. Come with your questions!

When: Tuesday, December 16, 12:00 pm – 1:30 p.m. PST.
