MAY 28th & 29th: Insight’s 7th Annual Western Canada Aboriginal Law Conference is fast approaching. This year, our own Lisa C. Fong will be presenting on the subject of the Species at Risk Act and its intersection with aboriginal interests. As discussed in the recent case of Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation v. Canada (Minister of the Environment), 2011 FC 962, the aboriginal right of First Nations to hunt species according to their traditional practices may affect the Crown’s exercise of its discretion when acting to manage species (or in this case, specific herds of caribou) that are threatened with extinction or extirpation. This developing area of law will be of interest to anyone practicing in the areas of aboriginal law of natural resource management. To register now, click here
